install the GEOS R Package in DSX

I am trying to convert DSX into an open source GIS tool so users who cannot afford commercial GIS packages can use DSX for all their GIS needs. Also, folks can use DSX to analyze ALL their data including geospatial data in one spot. This requires the installation of the GEOS package in R (also rgeos, GISTools and others) in DSX. Please can you do this ASAP? Thank you!

Update: We should be fully supporting the GEOS R package now in RStudio and R Notebooks!

Please give it a try and let us know what you think using the chat icon on the bottom right inside the product!

To leverage the GEOS R package, use the command: install.packages("rgeos")

Great idea ! Our Intelligence analysis teams in Security could leverage this. Additionally, we have many customers that need to analyze their geo based data, but do not not want the overhead of some of the full GIS vendors

Great idea. Client orgs want open source tools for these types of solutions. Can I suggest looking at the Asset Management area (eg what we used to call IFE) as one place that could benefit from integration with such?

Would be definitely nice to have GEOS (and GDAL, and RTree/libspatialindex) in DSX's R (as weel as in other IBM cloud instances for R and Python)!

This will not only be a differentiator, but also keep other BI vendors from encroaching into our data science domain for that feature alone. LOVE IT.

Many of our customers need this capability - think about municipalities, insurance companies, telcos,
etc. This is an obvious gap to fill.

Agree very much that we need geospatial support on DSX. It is necessary for analyzing GIS data, which is very commonplace.

100% agree - we need geospatial on DSX!

I strongly agree with this. I have used GIS data before and for many applications it provides a wealth of information and insight. Integrating it into DSX is an AWESOME idea!

Hi everyone - Thanks for the active discussion and large number of votes on this suggestion to install the GEOS R Package in DSX! We have reviewed it with our notebook development team and am happy to announce that we have accepted this idea and will be implementing it!

We are currently analyzing any dependencies for the package and reviewing implementation/installation plan + progress can be tracked here on this private GH issue: https://github.ibm.com/ax/planning/issues/1871. Will provide a further update when we've successfully installed the GEOS R Package into DSX!

If you have any additional questions or considerations for this specific idea, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at cecelia.shao@ibm.com and I'll make sure the larger product team is aware :)

Thanks again everybody - you make us so happy to work on DSX for you!

Thanks for the update Cecelia.  Unfortunately, it still does not work.  I have uploaded screenshots of the error messages within DSX chat.

    Thanks,

Thank you Cece, Greg and the rest of the offering and dev teams for making this happen!  And huge thanks to all of you who upvoted this idea!!  I will keep up my end of the bargain and will produce notebooks highlighting DSX's newly minted geospatial capabilities ASAP!
